Residents of Vuwani outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo have suspended the shutdown of services that started four weeks ago. Residents from various villages are demanding municipal services from the Vhembe District Municipality. President Jacob Zuma announced earlier this year that the Vhembe Municipality would provide services while a solution to the demarcation issue was being reached. The residents are against the inclusion of their area in the LIM345 Local Municipality, citing lack of proper consultation by the Municipal Demarcation Board. The shutdown of services has negatively affected schooling and other services. The Pro-Makhado Task Team says it is satisfied that government has met some of the residents' demands. The task team's spokesperson, Nsovo Sambo, says they have decided to suspend the shut-down while they continue to engage government on the remaining service delivery issues. “They have managed to meet those particular demands if though they are some few things that are left there and there we needed to things about the young ones those ones in Grade 12 we do believe that we took right decision at the right moment so by this decision we have suspended the shut-down and those minors things which are left we will communicate and engage with the government on how are they going to be resolved urgently in that regard." The Department of Basic of Education says it will start a catch-up programme for Grade Twelve learners in Vuwani. More than 1 500 Grade twelve learners were affected by the shutdown. |
